The 75th World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee (RC75) officially opened at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Kenneth Kaunda Wing, with hundreds of delegates from across Africa and beyond in attendance.
The meeting was led by His Excellency Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. Discussions focused on strengthening health systems, sharing best practices, and addressing common public health challenges. Delegates highlighted the need for coordinated responses to epidemics and improved regional collaboration.
President Hakainde Hichilema stressed that lessons from COVID-19 must guide future health strategies. He emphasized the importance of health diplomacy, harmonized public health regulations, and resilient institutions capable of responding to future outbreaks.
The President also acknowledged WHO’s 61 years of presence in Zambia, noting its significant role in building strong and responsive health systems. He concluded that RC75 demonstrates that solidarity is the most effective approach to public health, urging countries to translate lessons into actionable measures for a healthier Africa and world.
This gathering reinforces the commitment of African nations to unified, proactive health strategies that protect citizens and strengthen regional resilience.
