Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Keith Mweemba has paid glowing tribute to the pioneers of women’s football in Zambia, describing their efforts as the foundation of the nation’s rising success on the global stage. His remarks came during the inaugural Zambia Premier League (ZPL) Awards Gala, held Saturday night at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by National Women’s Representative Priscilla Katoba, Mweemba expressed deep appreciation for the trailblazers, sponsors, and players who have propelled women’s football forward in Zambia. He noted that their dedication and sacrifices have built a strong platform for future generations of female athletes.
“These early pioneers paved the way for the remarkable achievements we are witnessing today,” Mweemba said. “Their passion, resilience, and belief in the women’s game have laid the groundwork for our growing success.”
Mweemba highlighted Zambia’s increasing presence on the international scene, proudly pointing to the Under-17 Women’s National Team’s qualification for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in October. He also noted the positive trajectory of the Under-20 Women’s National Team, crediting strategic investment, targeted development programmes, and consistent support from stakeholders as key drivers of progress.
“The results we are seeing today are not accidental. They are a product of deliberate planning, sustained effort, and the belief that women’s football deserves equal recognition and support,” he added.
The ZPL Awards Gala served as a platform to honour not only athletic excellence but also the community behind the scenes—coaches, administrators, sponsors, and volunteers—who have supported the women’s game over the years.
With the future looking increasingly bright for Zambia’s female footballers, Mweemba reaffirmed FAZ’s commitment to growing the sport at all levels. He called on both the private and public sectors to continue investing in women’s football, ensuring that Zambia remains competitive on the continental and global stages.
As the applause echoed through the gala, it was clear that Zambia’s football story is being rewritten—with women at the heart of it.
