Last week marked a moment of pride and regional solidarity as Advocate Gideon Duma Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, was warmly welcomed in Lusaka during the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show. The visit served not only as a diplomatic gesture but also as a powerful symbol of collaboration and shared commitment to agricultural advancement in Southern Africa.

President Boko joined us in touring the vibrant exhibition stands, where innovations in farming, agribusiness, and sustainability were proudly displayed. The theme for this year’s show, “Adapting to Climate Change,” was fittingly reflected in the ingenuity and resilience demonstrated by Zambian farmers, who continue to rise above environmental challenges with grace and determination.

Amid lingering memories of the 2024 drought, the resilience of Zambia’s agricultural sector has been nothing short of remarkable. Farmers have begun to embrace climate-smart agricultural practices—from conservation farming to improved irrigation technologies—which have proven vital in sustaining food production during unpredictable weather patterns.

During the visit, we took the opportunity to express deep gratitude to our farmers for their unwavering commitment and hard work. Their determination ensured food security even under adverse conditions, and their openness to adopting innovative solutions reflects a promising future for the sector.

We also used the occasion to encourage continued investment in agricultural technologies and modern irrigation systems. These advancements are not only essential for boosting yields but also play a critical role in mitigating the impacts of climate change and building long-term resilience.

President Boko’s presence at the event was a true honor and a testament to the strong ties between Zambia and Botswana. His willingness to engage with our farming community and witness firsthand the strides we are making in agricultural development reflects a shared vision for food security, innovation, and sustainability across the region.

As we look to the future, the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show stands as a powerful reminder of the strength, adaptability, and potential of African agriculture. With regional cooperation and a continued embrace of innovation, the continent’s farmers are well-positioned to thrive in the face of climate change.
