The Zambia Police Service has summoned Dr. Fred M’membe, leader of the Socialist Party, to appear for questioning on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM. The police summons, issued by the Anti-Fraud Unit, has raised concerns among political figures, with some speculating that it may be related to comments Dr. M’membe made recently.

Kelvin Kaunda, the National Youth Chairman of the Socialist Party, expressed his suspicions that the summons may stem from a statement Dr. M’membe made calling on the defense forces to protect and defend the Constitution. Kaunda emphasized that such statements were made in the spirit of upholding democratic principles and that the summons might have serious implications for the political environment.

In a statement, the Zambia Police Anti-Fraud Unit indicated that Dr. M’membe was required to report to the Police Service Headquarters for investigations but reassured the public that he would not be detained longer than necessary. “Dr. Fred M’membe, you are required to report yourself to Zambia Police Service Headquarters on Wednesday, 26/03/25 at 10:00 hours for the purpose of investigations. You won’t be kept longer than is absolutely necessary,” the statement read.

While the official reason for the summons has not been made clear, the Socialist Party has expressed concern over the timing and nature of the investigation. Kaunda argued that the government should be more focused on addressing broader issues affecting the nation rather than scrutinizing political leaders for their public statements.

The situation is continuing to develop, and many are watching closely to see how it unfolds, given the possible implications for political freedoms and the role of the military in the country’s constitutional matters. Dr. M’membe’s appearance before the police on March 26 will likely shed more light on the motivations behind this summons.
