The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced a major leadership change at its secretariat, appointing seasoned football administrator Charles Chakatazya as the new General Secretary with immediate effect. The decision marks a significant shift in the administrative structure of Zambian football as the association seeks to strengthen governance and improve operational efficiency. Chakatazya replaces Machacha Shepande, who has stepped down on mutual terms after accepting an international assignment. The announcement reflects FAZ’s ongoing efforts to build a strong leadership team capable of steering football development in the country. The Executive Committee confirmed the decision following a meeting held to finalise the appointments.
Alongside the appointment of Chakatazya, FAZ also confirmed Iva Lengwe as Deputy General Secretary after serving in an acting capacity. His confirmation signals continuity within the secretariat and recognition of his performance during the interim period. The Executive Committee expressed confidence in both officials, highlighting their combined experience and understanding of football administration in Zambia. FAZ President Keith Mweemba publicly congratulated the two administrators and emphasized their importance in driving the association’s strategic goals. He noted that their leadership will play a crucial role in strengthening Football House operations and improving service delivery to stakeholders across the game. The appointments were unanimously approved during the Executive Committee meeting held earlier in the day.
Charles Chakatazya brings extensive experience in football administration, having worked with several top-tier clubs in Zambia. His career includes leadership roles as Chief Executive Officer at Nkana, Kabwe Warriors and NAPSA Stars, where he gained practical experience in club management and operations. His background in both local and international football environments positions him as a highly experienced administrator within the sport. Chakatazya is also a qualified professional outside football, holding membership with the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA). His academic credentials include a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Accounting and Finance from Mulungushi University, as well as a Diploma in Accounting from Evelyn Hone College. He has also enhanced his football governance expertise through a FIFA Diploma in Club Management obtained in Zurich and a Certificate in Senior Leadership Development from the University of Cape Town, and he is currently pursuing the CAF Executive Football Management Programme.
FAZ President Keith Mweemba praised Chakatazya’s appointment, describing him as a capable leader with a proven record in football administration. He stated that Chakatazya’s experience at some of Zambia’s most prominent Super League clubs will provide valuable insight into the operational needs of the association. Mweemba expressed confidence that his leadership will help strengthen governance structures and improve efficiency within FAZ. He also highlighted the importance of professionalism and accountability in the secretariat as key drivers of football development. According to FAZ, the appointment is part of a broader effort to align the association’s administration with international standards and best practices. The leadership change is expected to support ongoing reforms aimed at improving competitiveness and organizational stability in Zambian football.
The outgoing General Secretary, Machacha Shepande, was also acknowledged for his contribution to the association during his tenure. FAZ President Mweemba expressed appreciation for his service and wished him success in his new international role. He emphasized that Shepande remains part of the wider football family and may still contribute to the sport in future capacities. The transition was described as smooth and conducted in a spirit of mutual agreement, reflecting professionalism within the association’s leadership structures. FAZ indicated that continuity and institutional memory remain important priorities as new leaders step into key roles. The restructuring is expected to ensure stability while allowing fresh leadership to guide the next phase of football development.
The appointments of Charles Chakatazya and Iva Lengwe mark an important moment for FAZ as it continues to strengthen its administrative foundation. The association is placing emphasis on experienced leadership, technical knowledge and strong governance to support the growth of football in Zambia. With new leadership at the secretariat, expectations are high for improved coordination, better stakeholder engagement and more efficient management of football programs. The changes come at a time when Zambian football continues to evolve, requiring strong administrative capacity to match on-field ambitions. As FAZ moves forward under its current leadership, the focus remains on building a stable and progressive football system that benefits players, clubs and supporters across the country.
