Three years ago, a group of young people in Namwandwe Ward in Mansa District had no capital, no established business and limited access to formal economic opportunities. What they did have was determination, strong unity and a shared vision of changing their living conditions through enterprise. That vision has now developed into a functioning agribusiness that is steadily reshaping livelihoods in the community. The transformation reflects a broader shift in how youth empowerment initiatives are creating real economic impact at the local level. It also highlights how structured support can turn small beginnings into sustainable income streams.

The Mansa Mushroom Youth Cooperative, made up of 18 young members, has become one of the most practical examples of how the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is supporting grassroots entrepreneurship in Zambia. In 2023, the group received a K15,000 CDF grant under Mansa Central Constituency, which initially served as their starting point. Instead of treating the funds as short term assistance, the members chose to invest in oyster mushroom production as a long term business model. Their decision focused on sustainability, market demand and low entry barriers for production. Over time, this approach allowed the cooperative to transition from a small project into a structured business.

The enterprise has now grown into a reliable supplier of mushrooms within Mansa District and beyond. The cooperative currently supplies its products to Choppies Supermarket while also serving a growing base of individual customers. Weekly revenue has reached an estimated K3,000, marking a significant achievement for a rural youth led initiative. This level of income has helped the group reinvest in operations and improve production capacity. The success also reflects improved planning, discipline and consistency in managing the business.

Cooperative Chairperson Danny Chama has attributed the progress to teamwork and commitment among members. He explained that the group made a collective decision to prioritise growth and accountability from the beginning. According to him, external support provided the foundation, but internal discipline sustained the business journey. The members maintained strict production schedules and ensured quality control to meet market expectations. This approach helped the cooperative build trust with buyers and secure repeat customers.

As the business expanded, the cooperative reinvested profits into operational improvements to strengthen efficiency and delivery capacity. One of their key investments was the purchase of a motorcycle valued at K16,000, which has improved product distribution across the district. This development has reduced transportation challenges and allowed faster delivery to clients. The group has also diversified its operations by introducing Mamu Juice production as an additional income stream. This diversification has strengthened financial stability and reduced reliance on a single product line.

Beyond financial gains, the initiative has created meaningful employment opportunities for local youth. Eight young people are currently employed through the cooperative and receive monthly incomes. Members are also gaining practical experience in agribusiness management, financial planning and marketing strategies. These skills are increasingly valuable in a competitive economic environment where formal employment opportunities remain limited. The cooperative has therefore become both a business and a training platform for youth development.

The success of the Mansa Mushroom Youth Cooperative has also had a wider social impact in Namwandwe Ward. Many young people in the area are now exploring entrepreneurship after observing the progress made by the cooperative members. Community members describe the project as a source of motivation and practical proof that youth led businesses can succeed in rural areas. The initiative has also strengthened local confidence in government supported development programs. It demonstrates how structured funding can produce long term community benefits when effectively utilised.

The story of the cooperative highlights the broader impact of the Constituency Development Fund in driving grassroots economic transformation. It shows how targeted financial support can unlock innovation, create employment and build sustainable enterprises at community level. The cooperative’s growth reflects a shift from dependency to self reliance among young people in Mansa District. As the group continues to expand production and target larger markets, its members remain focused on long term growth and stability. Their journey stands as evidence that with opportunity, discipline and vision, young people can play a central role in shaping local economic development.
