Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, has reinforced Zambia’s positive economic trajectory and commitment to democratic principles during high-level discussions in the United Kingdom. In a meeting with the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Commonwealth, Hon. Chris Elmore, MP, Hon. Haimbe highlighted how the current administration has navigated the country from a challenging debt position to a more stable and promising economic outlook. The Minister emphasized that this progress is underpinned by strong fundamentals and a deliberate focus on practical, outcome-driven governance. He also reiterated Zambia’s unwavering dedication to democracy and human rights, stating that the Government is committed to “taking bold steps” and consistently “walking the talk” on its democratic principles. The meeting took place at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office as part of Hon. Haimbe’s official visit to London for the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) and Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting (CFAMM).
During the discussions, Hon. Haimbe and Hon. Elmore covered a wide range of topics, including multilateralism, peace and security, reforms within the Commonwealth, and investment opportunities. Zambia currently holds the position of Vice-Chair of CMAG, the Commonwealth’s mechanism dedicated to upholding political values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The two Ministers explored ways to strengthen collaboration in these areas, with Hon. Elmore acknowledging President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to free and fair elections. He noted that such adherence to democratic processes is a central pillar for the United Kingdom in fostering strong bilateral and multilateral engagement with Zambia. The UK expressed its readiness to continue supporting Zambia in transparency, human rights, and multilateral initiatives, observing that Zambia has been receiving highly positive international feedback for its governance reforms.
Hon. Haimbe welcomed the feedback and emphasized Zambia’s openness to peer review at the highest levels, signaling a shift away from traditional approaches toward more hands-on, results-oriented partnerships. He underscored the Government’s renewed focus on private sector-led growth, particularly in mining, energy, and tourism, highlighting these sectors as central to Zambia’s economic recovery and expansion. He further stressed that the administration’s efforts have moved the nation from a debt-laden position to one characterized by strong economic fundamentals and growth potential. The Minister also addressed global challenges, noting that the ongoing crisis in the Gulf region could affect the cost of consumables and petroleum products, but reaffirmed Zambia’s continued commitment to attracting investment, technical support, and sustainable development initiatives.
