Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary, Dr. Douty Chibamba, has emphasised the critical role of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in promoting responsible forest management while enabling local communities to benefit from sustainable practices. Dr. Chibamba revealed that the FSC aims to mobilise around US$400 million across Africa over the next 10 years to support countries demonstrating strong commitment to sustainable forestry. He made the remarks during a courtesy call on the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, where he was received by Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Alfred Musemuna, ahead of an FSC meeting focused on sustainable forestry initiatives and financing mechanisms.

The Permanent Secretary explained that forest certification ensures responsible management by preventing illegal logging, promoting environmental protection, and encouraging community involvement. He highlighted that sustainably managed forests provide essential ecosystem services, including food production, climate regulation, and mitigation of floods and droughts, which are vital in the context of climate change. Dr. Chibamba noted that certified forests can attract companies willing to pay for ecosystem services, creating financial incentives for local communities and strengthening conservation efforts.

During the FSC meeting, member countries presented their forest resources, achievements, and challenges in advancing sustainable forest management. Dr. Chibamba stated that Zambia used the platform to showcase its progress in forest governance and position itself to benefit from future FSC funding opportunities. He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sustainable forest management and enhanced international cooperation as key pillars in advancing Zambia’s green economy agenda.
