Today, Zambia marked a significant step in promoting menstrual health and hygiene with the launch of the “Her Health, Her Journey, Her Walk” campaign, officiated by Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr. Thabo Kawana. In parallel, the First Lady, Mrs. Thandiwe Banda, launched the “First Lady Hamper of Hope” by Wastemat Zambia, highlighting her commitment to the wellbeing of girls and women.

The campaign reinforces the Government’s dedication to advancing the dignity, health, and rights of girls and women, recognizing menstrual health as a critical public health, education, environmental, and human rights issue. Historically, stigma, silence, and misinformation have limited awareness and access to menstrual health services.

Through the Ministry of Health, the Government is integrating menstrual health education and services into primary healthcare. This includes community sensitization initiatives and support for adolescent girls in both rural and urban areas. The Ministry of Education continues to mainstream menstrual health in school curricula and school health programs, while improving access to sanitary products, water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. These measures aim to prevent school absenteeism among girls during menstruation.

The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment is promoting environmentally sustainable menstrual products and responsible waste management, aligning menstrual health initiatives with climate resilience and environmental protection.

During the launch, Permanent Secretary Kawana emphasized the media’s role in ensuring the campaign’s success. The media is called upon to provide accurate information, break myths and taboos, amplify the voices of girls and women, and hold institutions accountable for implementing policies. The Government remains committed to creating a supportive policy and institutional framework for menstrual health and hygiene.

First Lady Thandiwe Banda stressed that every girl should have access to medical-grade, hygienic, and safe menstrual solutions, transforming menstrual management into a standard of health excellence. She noted that the launch of the “First Lady Hamper of Hope” symbolizes the importance she places on menstrual health and the overall wellbeing of girls and women. She commended Government for its ongoing support and institutional engagement in promoting menstrual health and hygiene.

The launch of these initiatives marks a national commitment to menstrual health, education, and empowerment, ensuring that girls and women can manage their menstrual health with dignity, safety, and confidence.
