Sino Metal representatives, accompanied by stakeholders Lulu Shi and Wang Jingjun, recently met with Zambian authorities following a pollution incident linked to their operations. The delegation expressed regret for the environmental impact and requested consideration to resume operations.
Vice President Dr. W.K Mutale-Nalumango responded firmly, emphasizing that while Zambia values and protects investors, the government’s foremost responsibility is the health and safety of its citizens. He assured the delegation that the challenges arising from the incident would be addressed as authorities continue to follow established procedures.
The Vice President welcomed Sino Metal’s commitment to adhere to government guidance in managing the fallout from the accident. He acknowledged their apology as a gesture of goodwill, but stated that a final decision on resuming operations would depend on a comprehensive review. A team of Ministers will evaluate and validate the preliminary report to ensure all findings are accurate.
Sino Metal was advised to implement all necessary measures to prevent further harm and eliminate any risk of secondary pollution to surrounding communities. Dr. Mutale-Nalumango stressed that only through diligence, transparency, and accountability can Zambia balance investor interests with the safety of its population.
The government’s approach underscores its commitment to sustainable development, ensuring that foreign investments operate responsibly while safeguarding public health and the environment.
