Zambian sprinter Muzala Samukonga bowed out of the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, after narrowly missing a spot in the men’s 400m final. Samukonga finished third in Heat-3 of the semi-finals, recording an impressive time of 44.60 seconds. His performance ranked him ninth overall across all semi-final heats.

The semi-final round featured stiff competition from some of the world’s top 400m athletes, including former world and Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada and Botswana’s Bayapo Ndori. Despite this, Samukonga showcased his strength, speed, and resilience on the global stage, demonstrating Zambia’s growing presence in elite sprinting.

Heat-3 was intensely contested. Bayapo Ndori claimed the top spot with a time of 44.21 seconds, while Japan’s Yuki Joseph Nakajima secured second place to earn automatic qualification for the final. Samukonga’s third-place finish was commendable but fell just short of the automatic qualifying positions.

Samukonga’s 44.60-second clocking reflects consistent progress and positions him as a serious contender for future global competitions. His performance underscores Zambia’s potential in sprint events and adds valuable experience ahead of the next World Championships and Olympic Games.

Though he did not advance to the final, Samukonga’s showing in Tokyo highlights his talent and determination, reinforcing his status as one of Zambia’s top athletes on the international stage.
