President Hakainde Hichilema has called on Qatar to prioritize investment in Zambia’s energy sector to help address the country’s ongoing energy challenges. The appeal came during a courtesy visit by a Qatari delegation led by His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Jabor Bin Jassim al Thani, who emphasized Al Mansour Holding’s commitment to driving development in Zambia.
During the meeting at State House on Monday, President Hichilema highlighted the importance of leveraging international partnerships to boost Zambia’s energy capacity and ensure reliable power supply for industries and households. “We are delighted with our bilateral relationship, Your Highness,” he said, referencing his 2023 state visit to Qatar, which strengthened ties between the two nations.
The discussions culminated in the signing of a $19 billion partnership agreement between Zambia and Qatar. The partnership targets key sectors, including energy, banking, finance, and housing, signaling a comprehensive approach to economic development. President Hichilema expressed optimism that these investments would accelerate growth, create jobs, and enhance infrastructure across Zambia.
His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Jabor Bin Jassim al Thani reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to Zambia, noting that Al Mansour Holding’s vision is to support sustainable development and economic transformation. Both leaders agreed to work closely to implement projects that improve Zambia’s energy sector and broader economic landscape.
