In a solemn moment marked by unity and diplomacy, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, extended heartfelt gratitude following a courtesy visit from South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Ronald Ozzy Lamola.

The visit, held in Lusaka, served as a conduit for the South African government and people to express their deepest sympathies on the passing of Zambia’s 6th Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Minister Lamola delivered a personal message of condolence from His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa.

During the meeting, President Hichilema described the discussion as meaningful and respectful, with both nations reaffirming their shared values of dignity, honour, and continental solidarity. Central to the conversation was the burial of the late President Lungu, with the Zambian Head of State emphasizing the nation’s firm position that the former president be laid to rest in his homeland, the Republic of Zambia.

“This is where his legacy was forged, where his leadership was felt, and where his people will forever honour his memory,” President Hichilema said.

He went on to extend Zambia’s heartfelt appreciation to the government and people of South Africa for the care extended to Mr. Lungu during his time of illness. In particular, he expressed gratitude for the medical support and hospitality provided throughout the difficult period.

President Hichilema also offered sincere apologies to the South African National Defence Force for the unexpected logistical challenges that arose during the repatriation of the late President’s remains on Wednesday, 18th June 2025.

“These are moments that test our protocols, our partnerships, and our patience. But they also reveal the depth of our friendship and mutual respect,” he said.

As the two Southern African nations navigate this moment of shared grief, the strong diplomatic ties between Zambia and South Africa have once again come to the fore—underscoring the enduring spirit of ubuntu that continues to bind the region.

President Lungu, who served Zambia from 2015 to 2021, leaves behind a legacy of leadership during a pivotal time in the nation’s democratic journey. His final resting place, soon to be confirmed, is expected to be one of honour, reflective of his contribution to Zambia’s history.

The Zambian government is expected to announce further details regarding the state funeral arrangements in the coming days.
