In a solemn gesture of mourning and respect, President Hakainde Hichilema visited the Embassy of the Holy See in Lusaka this morning to offer heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Zambian people following the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis.
In a deeply personal message, President Hichilema honoured the Pope’s enduring legacy of humility, compassion, and unwavering advocacy for the vulnerable. Describing Pope Francis as a moral compass in turbulent times, the President reflected on the global impact of a leader who, in both life and death, exemplified selflessness and service.
“The Pope’s humility transcended both life and death. He lived simply, and even in passing, he reminded the world of what it truly means to be humble,” the President remarked.
He further highlighted Pope Francis’ steadfast commitment to justice and human dignity, noting how he consistently gave voice to the marginalised—refugees, the unborn, the childless, and victims of war and indifference.
“In an era increasingly defined by division, wars, and indifference to the vulnerable, Pope Francis remained a steadfast voice for the marginalised, the refugee, the war-weary, the unborn, and the childless.”
President Hichilema described the late Pope not only as a spiritual shepherd, but also as a global statesman whose compassion served as a healing balm for a hurting world.
“Today, humanity mourns not just the passing of a religious leader and great statesman, but the loss of a profoundly good man, whose presence reminded us of our shared moral duty to uplift the least among us.”
The President concluded his message with a prayer for Pope Francis’ eternal rest and a renewed commitment to the values he championed.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Pope Francis, the first pontiff from the Global South, was widely respected for his humility, progressive voice, and tireless advocacy for peace and human dignity. His passing marks the end of a transformative papacy, mourned by millions across the world, including here in Zambia.
