The Zambia Chinese Association has donated K1.2 million in cash and relief supplies to assist families affected by the recent floods that have displaced many across the country. The donation includes essential food supplies, non-food items, and financial support for reconstruction efforts.

Vice President Commends Chinese Community

Speaking at the donation ceremony at the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) on Monday, Vice President Mutale Nalumango praised the Chinese community for their timely intervention. She acknowledged their continued support despite facing global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and emphasized the long-standing diplomatic relations between Zambia and China.

“The government is always appreciative of the support from the Chinese people. This gesture will go a long way in assisting victims, and it reflects the 60 years of cordial relations between our two countries,” she said.

Relief Package Breakdown

Zambia Chinese Association President Zhang Jiang highlighted the community’s shared concern for the flood victims and the importance of giving back during times of crisis.

“We gather here with deep concern and responsibility for the disaster-affected people, bringing warmth and hope to those in need,” Zhang stated.

The relief package consists of:

  • Food supplies: Maize meal, rice, and cooking oil
  • Non-food items: Disinfectants, blankets, and protective gear for sanitation and temporary resettlement
  • Cash donation: K200,000 to aid reconstruction efforts in affected areas

Zhang attributed the rapid response to the collective efforts of nearly 60 Chinese enterprises and expatriates based in Zambia, calling the donation a “symbol of love and care” from the overseas Chinese community.

Chinese Envoy Reaffirms Commitment

Acting Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Wang Sheng reaffirmed the Chinese community’s commitment to humanitarian and development initiatives in the country. He expressed solidarity with Zambia, drawing parallels between the floods in Zambia and similar challenges faced in China.

“With similar challenges of floods being faced at home, we in China share the pain and loss of the Zambian people from the bottom of our hearts. We are taking action and stand ready to provide more humanitarian assistance within our capacity in a timely manner,” Sheng said.

Call for More Support

As the flood crisis continues to unfold, the Zambian government has urged both local and international partners to step in and provide further assistance to ensure affected families receive adequate support.
