Acting Health Minister Gary Nkombo has revealed that substance abuse and mental disorders are among the leading causes of hospital admissions among youths in Zambia. Additionally, he noted that depression is particularly prevalent among women, while cardiovascular diseases are more common among city dwellers due to unhealthy dietary habits.

Speaking in the National Assembly on Thursday, Nkombo responded to a question from Chiengi Independent Member of Parliament Given Katuta, who sought details on the number of recorded mental disorder cases across the country from 2021 to 2024. Nkombo disclosed that the Ministry of Health had recorded a cumulative total of 99,093 cases of mental disorders over the past four years.

According to the data:

  • 2021: 19,000 cases
  • 2022: 21,026 cases
  • 2023: 27,010 cases
  • 2024: 32,057 cases

The statistics indicate a concerning rise in mental health issues, with cases increasing each year. Nkombo attributed this trend to various social and economic factors, including substance abuse among young people.

He also highlighted the growing incidence of cardiovascular diseases, particularly among urban populations. He explained that individuals living in cities are more susceptible to these conditions due to the high consumption of junk food, which contributes to obesity, high blood pressure, and other lifestyle-related illnesses.

The Health Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling mental health challenges and promoting public awareness about the risks of substance abuse and unhealthy lifestyles. He urged citizens to prioritize mental well-being and adopt healthier eating habits to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases.

As Zambia continues to grapple with rising mental health cases, experts have called for increased investment in mental health services, awareness campaigns, and support systems for affected individuals.
