Barrick Gold Corporation’s ambitious Lumwana expansion project is set to significantly boost Zambia’s copper production, with the company aiming to double its output to a life-of-mine average of 240,000 tonnes per year. This expansion, which is expected to run through 2028, will also create thousands of construction jobs, further contributing to Zambia’s economic development.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Barrick reaffirmed its commitment to Zambia’s growth, noting that it has already contributed over US$3.7 billion to the Zambian economy since 2019. According to Anthony Malenga, Barrick’s Zambia Country Manager, Lumwana’s operations alone contributed a substantial US$887 million to the economy in 2024, through royalties, taxes, salaries, and the procurement of goods and services. This reinforces the mine’s position as one of Zambia’s top five taxpayers.

The increase in copper production is supported by ongoing investments in operator training and the upgrade of Lumwana’s ultra-class fleet. These efforts are part of Barrick’s strategy to enhance the efficiency and capacity of the mine, ensuring that it remains a key player in Zambia’s mining sector.

“We are transforming the surrounding Kalumbila District into a mining-powered economic hub that will endure beyond Lumwana’s expanded life of mine,” said Mark Bristow, Barrick’s President and CEO. His statement highlights the company’s vision for creating long-lasting economic opportunities in the region, even after the mine’s operations wind down.

Barrick is also making strides to ensure that the expansion brings long-term benefits to the local community. The company is extending its Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA)-accredited training center, providing essential skills to local workers. This initiative is aimed at equipping Zambians with the necessary expertise to thrive in the mining sector and beyond.

Local content remains a priority for Barrick, with 72% of the US$906 million spent on goods and services in 2024 going to Zambian suppliers and contractors. This focus on supporting local businesses is crucial for fostering sustainable growth in the region.

The Lumwana expansion is not only a win for Barrick but also for Zambia, as it strengthens the country’s position as a leading global copper producer. With the growth in production and the creation of new jobs, Barrick’s investment in Zambia is set to have a transformative impact on the economy, driving further development and empowering local communities in the years to come.
