The National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) has achieved a significant milestone by publishing a book that chronicles Zambia’s participation and achievements at the Olympic Games since 1964. Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, commended this historic effort during the launch of the book titled “Our Story Since 1964” in Lusaka.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Assistant Director Elite Sport in the Ministry of Sports, Gibson Muyaule, Mr. Nkandu expressed the government’s appreciation for the NOCZ initiative, noting its alignment with the country’s commitment to preserving and sharing historical sports materials for future generations.

“This initiative affirms the government’s commitment to producing historic sports material that will enable future generations to learn about Zambia’s rich Olympic history and achievements,” Mr. Nkandu stated.

A Tribute to Zambia’s Sporting Legacy
The Minister highlighted that the book captures Zambia’s impressive performance in major international sports events in recent years, showcasing the nation’s excellence in sports.

“This publication has come at the right time as the Ministry is in the process of establishing a sports museum at the National Heroes Stadium. A copy of this book will be deposited in the museum for future generations to access and learn about our journey in the sports sector,” he added.

Mr. Nkandu urged the Ministry of Education to include the book in school libraries to provide students with the opportunity to understand and appreciate Zambia’s Olympic history, calling it a crucial step in advancing sports development in the country.

Inspiring Future Generations
NOCZ President Alfred Foloko echoed the call for the book to be made widely available, emphasizing its role in educating and inspiring future athletes.

“This book is not just about the past; it’s about paving the way for the future of Zambian sports. It will help future sportsmen and women aim higher and achieve even greater success on international platforms,” said Mr. Foloko.

He further thanked the government and stakeholders for their support, affirming that the NOCZ will continue producing similar works to document and celebrate Zambia’s sports history.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future
The book also pays tribute to Zambia’s fallen sports heroes and key personalities who played pivotal roles in shaping the country’s Olympic journey. Former NOCZ President Miriam Moyo congratulated the NOCZ Secretariat for this historic publication and urged Zambians to embrace it as a valuable resource for learning about the nation’s sports history.

The launch event, attended by representatives from national sports federations, corporate stakeholders, athletes, and government officials, underscored the significance of preserving Zambia’s rich sporting heritage.

A Collaborative Effort
NOCZ Marketing and Finance Chairperson Daisy Kopolo emphasized the importance of collaboration in future projects. “We are open to partnering with more entities to produce similar publications that will inspire not only Zambians but audiences across the globe,” she said.

Autographed by NOCZ board members, athletes, and dignitaries, “Our Story Since 1964” is a groundbreaking first for Zambia, capturing the nation’s Olympic history and setting the stage for future editions.

This historic achievement marks a pivotal moment in Zambia’s sports sector, celebrating its legacy while inspiring the next generation of athletes and scholars.
