The government has revealed a concerning increase in accidents within the mining sector in 2024, with a total of 98 incidents reported, 31 of which were fatal. Speaking during a media briefing on Wednesday, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe attributed the rise in accidents to the proliferation of illegal mining activities, particularly in the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sub-sector.
“Despite awareness campaigns conducted in various mines, there was an increase in reportable accidents in 2024 compared to 2023,” Kabuswe said. In 2023, 43 accidents were recorded, with 19 resulting in fatalities. The nearly 130% rise in accidents underscores the challenges facing the sector, particularly in curbing unsafe mining practices.
Illegal Mining a Growing Concern
The Minister highlighted that illegal mining activities have been a significant contributor to the rise in accidents, especially in the ASM sub-sector, which often lacks the necessary safety measures and oversight. He noted that while efforts have been made to raise awareness on mine safety, the increase in accidents indicates the need for more stringent enforcement and collaboration with stakeholders.
Revenue Collection Improves
On a positive note, Kabuswe disclosed that non-tax revenue collection from the mining sector increased by 49.96% during the same period. The boost in revenue highlights the government’s efforts to enhance accountability and resource management in the mining sector.
Government Commitment to Safety
To address the rising number of accidents, the government plans to intensify safety awareness campaigns and enforcement of mining regulations. Kabuswe reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of workers in the sector, ensuring that mining operations are conducted in compliance with safety standards.
The mining sector remains a vital component of the economy, and the government’s focus on improving safety and revenue collection is expected to strengthen its overall contribution. However, the rise in fatalities underscores the need for urgent measures to address the challenges posed by illegal mining and inadequate safety compliance.
