EU Pledges €4 Million to Zambia for Climate Change Act Implementation

The European Union (EU) has committed €4 million to Zambia to support the implementation of the Climate Change Act, through the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). This contribution underscores the EU’s recognition of Zambia’s efforts in adopting the Green Economy and Climate Change Act.

EU’s Contribution Agreement

EU Ambassador to Zambia, Karolina Stasiak, announced that the formal signing of the €4 million contribution agreement is set to take place in the first trimester of 2025. The funds will strengthen Zambia’s journey toward environmental sustainability, spearheaded by the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment.

The Ambassador also disclosed that an additional €10 million is planned for the Forest Partnership. This funding aims to jointly identify and formulate actionable objectives to combat forest-related challenges.

EU-Zambia Forest Partnership

Speaking at the second meeting of the EU-Zambia Forest Partnership Political Working Group in Lusaka, Ms. Stasiak highlighted the ambitious scope of the Forest Partnership strategy. The initiative addresses critical issues such as:

  • High levels of deforestation and forest degradation.
  • Promoting ecosystem resilience and environmental sustainability.
  • Strengthening forest governance.
  • Enhancing technical skills and raising public awareness.

The EU-Zambia Forest Partnership exemplifies the EU’s commitment to fostering sustainable development. Through collaborative efforts, the strategy aims to tackle environmental challenges while ensuring Zambia is equipped with the tools and resources needed to uphold its climate change commitments.

The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Harriet Chimuka, emphasized the importance of this partnership in advancing Zambia’s green economy agenda.
