Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) has officially appointed the multi-qualified entrepreneur and business executive Cuthbert Malindi as its new Managing Director, effective January 2, 2025. This announcement marks the end of nearly three years of leadership uncertainty at ZRL.

The ZRL board unveiled Mr. Malindi on Tuesday, praising his extensive expertise and strategic vision to revive the struggling state-owned railway operator. The board emphasized his qualifications and vast experience, which position him as a transformative leader for the company.

A Multi-Skilled Executive

Mr. Malindi is a seasoned mechanical engineer, chartered accountant, and chartered financial expert. In addition, he is an experienced venture capitalist, business transaction advisor, and investment executive. His career spans over 25 years, marked by success in transportation, logistics, and investment management across Southern and East Africa.

The ZRL board highlighted Mr. Malindi’s strong background in government and pension fund-backed equity, as well as venture capital funds in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia. His expertise in capital raising, business restructuring, and growth initiatives is expected to be instrumental in revitalizing ZRL’s operations.

Addressing Leadership Gaps

Mr. Malindi’s appointment comes after a prolonged leadership vacuum at ZRL. Following the departure of former CEO Christopher Musonda in December 2021, the company underwent two interim leadership phases. Fred Mwila served as acting CEO for two years, followed by Godfrey Fumbeshi, who acted for nine months.

Challenges Ahead

ZRL faces significant challenges, including aging infrastructure and a pressing need for investment. In 2012, the company received a $120 million Eurobond to revitalize its operations. However, achieving a full turnaround remains a daunting task. With Mr. Malindi at the helm, there is renewed hope that ZRL can chart a path to stability and growth.

Public Reactions

The news of Mr. Malindi’s appointment has sparked mixed reactions. Some commentators, like Mayo Mpapa, have expressed concerns about potential political interference, drawing parallels to past controversies. Others, like TikkiTikki, have called for more transparency regarding his previous roles and achievements.

A Vision for the Future

As Mr. Malindi officially begins his tenure, all eyes are on his ability to navigate ZRL’s complex challenges and deliver tangible results. His track record in strategic leadership and investment management could provide the much-needed impetus to position ZRL as a competitive player in the region’s transportation sector.

ZRL’s future now rests in the hands of a leader described as a visionary with a wealth of experience. It remains to be seen how Mr. Malindi will steer the company toward a sustainable and prosperous future.
