In a move aimed at boosting Zambia’s agricultural sector, Republican President Hakainde Hichilema has revealed plans to establish a modern fertilizer plant in Simamba Chiefdom. The $850 million USD investment is expected to significantly enhance the country’s agricultural productivity, create employment opportunities, and support the local market as well as neighboring regions.
President Hichilema made the announcement during the Bagande Lwiindi Traditional Ceremony, a key cultural event for the Tonga people, where he also emphasized the importance of aligning traditional heritage with modern development. The new fertilizer plant is projected to produce 520,000 metric tons of urea and 300,000 metric tons of synthetic ammonia annually. These products are expected to meet local demand and facilitate Zambia’s growing agricultural needs.
Fostering Economic Growth Through Agriculture
President Hichilema reiterated his commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector, which remains a critical pillar of Zambia’s economy. The establishment of the fertilizer plant is seen as a vital step toward enhancing food security, improving crop yields, and reducing the cost of agricultural inputs for local farmers.
“Fostering agricultural development is central to our government’s vision for national growth. This investment will not only increase productivity but also create close to 3,000 jobs, contributing to the economic empowerment of our communities,” President Hichilema stated.
Honoring Cultural Heritage and Community Support
The President also took the opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Tonga people, acknowledging the significance of the Lwiindi ceremony. He praised the Tonga community for their efforts in preserving their traditions, noting that their culture plays an important role in the development of the nation.
In addition, the President highlighted the ongoing efforts of his administration to improve the livelihoods of rural communities. As part of these initiatives, the Constituency Development Fund has been increased dramatically, from K1.6 million to K36.1 million, to ensure that resources are more effectively distributed to local communities for infrastructure and social development.

On behalf of His Royal Highness Chief Simamba XI, a representative expressed appreciation to President Hichilema for his attendance at the ceremony and his continuous support for the Chiefdom. The Chief’s representative also lauded the government’s progress in addressing community needs, with particular reference to the increased funding allocated to constituencies across the country.
