Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has highlighted the importance of further investment and expansion at Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) as the country works to increase copper production and strengthen its mining sector. The President made the remarks following an engagement with Mr. Pushpender Singla, Head of Strategy and Growth at Vedanta Resources, who shared an update on the company’s progress and future plans for KCM. The discussions focused on expanding mining operations and increasing copper production at one of Zambia’s most important mining assets. The proposed expansion is expected to play a significant role in Zambia’s broader ambitions for the mining industry. It also forms part of the government’s wider efforts to drive economic growth under its Grow Zambia Agenda.

According to President Hichilema, Vedanta presented a report outlining its progress and further plans to significantly increase production at Konkola Copper Mine. The company is working towards taking copper production to 500,000 metric tonnes, a target that would represent a major expansion of KCM’s contribution to Zambia’s copper industry. President Hichilema said this increase would contribute considerably towards the country’s broader target of producing three million metric tonnes of copper. Zambia has been seeking to attract greater investment into mining while increasing production from existing operations and developing new opportunities across the sector. The expansion of KCM therefore carries importance not only for Vedanta but also for Zambia’s long-term economic ambitions.

The proposed production increase comes as Zambia continues to position copper as a major driver of economic growth and investment. Copper remains central to the country’s mining economy and has growing importance globally because of its use in electricity networks, renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles and other technologies. Increasing domestic production could help Zambia strengthen its position as a major copper-producing country while creating opportunities across the wider mining value chain. Higher output from established mines such as KCM could also support employment, supplier businesses and other economic activities linked to mining. The government’s three million metric tonne production ambition therefore requires major investment, improved operational performance and continued cooperation between the public and private sectors.

President Hichilema also used the engagement to encourage Vedanta to accelerate its plans to invest in power generation to support its mining operations. Reliable electricity remains an important requirement for large-scale mining because mining, processing and related activities depend heavily on a stable power supply. Investment in additional generation capacity could help KCM strengthen the reliability of its operations while also contributing to Zambia’s national energy ambitions. President Hichilema said such investment would contribute to the government’s target of developing 10 gigawatts of power generation capacity. The push for greater private sector participation in energy generation reflects the close relationship between Zambia’s mining expansion plans and the country’s need for stronger electricity infrastructure.

The proposed investment in power generation could also have wider implications beyond Konkola Copper Mine. Zambia’s mining sector is a major consumer of electricity, making energy security an important part of efforts to expand mineral production. Additional generation capacity could help reduce pressure on the national electricity system while supporting industrial activity and future investment. For KCM, a stronger power supply would provide an important foundation for increasing production towards the 500,000 metric tonne target. It could also help create greater certainty for long-term planning as Vedanta advances its investment programme at the mine.

The engagement with Vedanta forms part of a broader series of discussions being held by the Zambian government to attract investment and accelerate economic development. President Hichilema has continued to emphasise the need for partnerships between government and businesses to unlock Zambia’s economic potential. Mining remains a major area of focus because of its contribution to exports, employment, government revenue and investment. At the same time, the government has been seeking to ensure that mining growth is supported by infrastructure and other sectors that can sustain broader economic development. The discussions around KCM and power generation therefore connect directly with wider efforts to strengthen Zambia’s productive capacity.

Konkola Copper Mine has a significant place in Zambia’s mining history and remains an important asset in the country’s copper-producing region. Increased investment in the mine could provide opportunities to improve production, expand operations and strengthen the surrounding mining ecosystem. A production target of 500,000 metric tonnes would require substantial investment in mining infrastructure, processing capacity, technology, skills and supporting services. The success of such an expansion would depend on effective implementation and continued cooperation between Vedanta and the Zambian government. It would also place KCM among the operations expected to make a substantial contribution to Zambia’s national copper ambitions.

President Hichilema described the engagement and other similar initiatives as part of efforts to drive the Grow Zambia Agenda. The agenda places economic expansion, investment and increased productive activity at the centre of Zambia’s development ambitions. Major projects in mining and energy can contribute to these objectives by attracting capital, supporting jobs and creating opportunities for local businesses. The government’s focus on increasing copper production while expanding electricity generation also reflects the need to develop different parts of the economy together. For Zambia, achieving its ambitious production targets will require sustained investment and close collaboration across government, industry and other stakeholders.

The discussions with Vedanta signal continued government attention on the future of Konkola Copper Mine and its potential contribution to Zambia’s mining sector. Moving towards 500,000 metric tonnes of annual copper production would represent a major step towards the country’s three million metric tonne target. At the same time, accelerating investment in power generation could strengthen the foundation needed to support mining expansion while contributing to the national 10 gigawatt electricity target. The combination of increased mining production and stronger energy capacity could create significant opportunities for Zambia’s economy. As the government advances its Grow Zambia Agenda, the implementation of these investment plans will remain important to turning the country’s production and economic growth ambitions into measurable results.
