The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed football administrator Lieutenant Colonel Kambani Ronald Lungu as General Manager for National Teams with immediate effect. The appointment forms part of FAZ’s efforts to strengthen the coordination, administration and overall support of Zambia’s national football teams. Lungu brings extensive experience in football administration, having worked in different roles at both club and association level. His appointment comes at an important time as FAZ continues to focus on improving the management and development of national teams across different age groups and competitions. The football administrator is expected to use his experience to help create stronger coordination between the technical, administrative and operational structures supporting Zambia’s national teams.

FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said Lungu brings a wealth of football knowledge and administrative experience to the national teams set-up. According to Chakatazya, the appointment is intended to strengthen the way national teams are coordinated and managed. The General Manager for National Teams will have an important role in ensuring that the different teams receive the administrative and logistical support required to operate effectively. This includes working with technical teams and other administrators to ensure that preparations and operations are properly coordinated. FAZ believes Lungu’s previous experience in football administration will help improve the overall functioning of the national teams structure.

Chakatazya expressed confidence that Lungu’s experience will add value to the national teams set-up. He said the administrator’s role would be critical in ensuring that Zambia’s national teams are properly coordinated and supported. The position requires close collaboration between administrators, coaches, technical personnel and other stakeholders involved in national team activities. Effective administration can have a direct impact on preparations for international matches, training camps, player logistics and other operational requirements. FAZ therefore expects Lungu to contribute to a more organised and efficient system as the association continues its work with Zambia’s national teams.

Lungu currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Zambian Premier League side Red Arrows, giving him direct experience in the administration of professional football. His current position has exposed him to the day-to-day responsibilities involved in managing a football club and supporting its sporting operations. Before becoming Chief Executive Officer, he served as Team Manager at Red Arrows, where he gained further experience in team administration and coordination. His progression through different administrative positions has given him an understanding of both the operational and organisational sides of football. That background is expected to be useful as he takes on the responsibility of managing national team administration at FAZ.

The newly appointed General Manager also has experience beyond Red Arrows, having previously served as a member of the Power Dynamos executive committee. His involvement with another prominent Zambian football club further demonstrates his experience within the local football administration environment. Working at club level provides administrators with practical knowledge of player management, team operations, competition requirements and communication between different football stakeholders. These experiences can be valuable when managing national teams, where coordination often involves multiple parties and different levels of football administration. Lungu’s background therefore gives FAZ an administrator who understands several aspects of the Zambian football system.

FAZ expects Lungu to work closely with technical and administrative teams across all levels of the national teams structure. This responsibility will require regular coordination with coaches, team managers, support staff and other officials involved in national team programmes. Zambia has national teams that participate in competitions across different age categories and levels, making effective administration essential to maintaining consistency across the system. The General Manager will need to help ensure that operational requirements are addressed while supporting the technical teams in their preparations. Strong communication between the administrative and technical structures can help national teams focus more effectively on their sporting objectives.

The appointment also comes after Chakatazya moved into the position of FAZ General Secretary. Chakatazya previously held the General Manager for National Teams position before taking up his new responsibilities as General Secretary. Lungu will therefore take over a role that Chakatazya understands from direct experience within the national teams administration structure. The change allows FAZ to place a dedicated administrator in the position while Chakatazya focuses on his wider responsibilities as General Secretary. The transition is expected to provide continuity while also bringing Lungu’s experience and approach to the management of national team operations.

The role of General Manager for National Teams is important because successful national team programmes require more than technical preparation on the pitch. Players and coaches need reliable administrative support covering areas such as travel arrangements, training schedules, accommodation, equipment and communication. International football also involves strict competition deadlines and organisational requirements that must be managed carefully. A central administrator can help coordinate these responsibilities and ensure that technical teams have the necessary support to prepare for matches and tournaments. Lungu’s appointment signals FAZ’s intention to place greater emphasis on coordination as part of its wider national team management structure.

Lungu’s appointment also highlights the growing importance of experienced football administrators within Zambia’s football system. Administrators play a key role in creating the conditions that allow players and coaches to perform at their best. Their responsibilities often involve coordinating different stakeholders while ensuring that football programmes operate within established organisational structures. Experience at club level can provide useful insight into the challenges associated with managing teams, personnel and competition requirements. FAZ will now look to Lungu to apply that experience to the national teams environment and contribute to improved administration across Zambia’s representative sides.

The appointment is expected to be closely followed by football supporters as Zambia’s national teams continue to compete on the international stage. The success of national teams depends on the combined efforts of players, coaches, technical staff, administrators and football authorities. While results are ultimately determined on the field, strong organisation behind the scenes can provide teams with a more stable platform for preparation and competition. FAZ’s decision to appoint Lungu reflects its focus on strengthening this administrative component. His experience with Red Arrows, Power Dynamos and other football structures gives him a foundation from which to take on the new responsibility.

FAZ has welcomed Lieutenant Colonel Kambani Ronald Lungu into the new position and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the development and management of Zambia’s national teams. His immediate appointment as General Manager for National Teams places him at the centre of the association’s efforts to improve coordination across the national team system. With experience as a club chief executive, team manager and executive committee member, Lungu brings a broad background in Zambian football administration to the position. His success in the new role will depend on effective collaboration with technical teams, administrators and other stakeholders at every level. As FAZ continues to strengthen its national teams structures, Lungu’s appointment represents another step towards creating a more coordinated and professionally managed football environment in Zambia.
