The Zambian Government has taken another significant step toward improving trade competitiveness and strengthening quality assurance by handing over advanced laboratory equipment to the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS). The investment is expected to enhance the country’s testing and conformity assessment capacity while supporting industries that rely on internationally recognized quality standards. Through stronger laboratory services, Zambia aims to improve the competitiveness of locally produced goods in regional and global markets. The initiative also reinforces the Government’s commitment to promoting industrial growth, protecting consumers and facilitating easier trade across key economic corridors. The development reflects Zambia’s broader strategy of creating a modern standards system that supports economic development and sustainable industrialization.

The laboratory equipment was provided through a collaborative effort involving several development partners and regional organizations. A large portion of the equipment was procured under the National Lobito Corridor Trade Facilitation Project with financial support from the African Development Bank (AfDB). Additional equipment was donated by the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) through the PROFishBlue Programme, further strengthening Zambia’s technical capabilities. These partnerships demonstrate the importance of international cooperation in supporting infrastructure that promotes trade and economic growth. By investing in modern laboratory technology, Zambia is positioning itself to meet the increasing demands of both regional and international markets.

According to a joint statement issued by Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Principal Public Relations Officer Everness Nankala and Zambia Bureau of Standards Senior Communications Officer Lupiya Mazunda, the equipment represents a major milestone in improving conformity assessment services across the country. The statement highlighted that stronger laboratory capacity will improve the efficiency, accuracy and reliability of testing services offered by ZABS. Reliable testing plays a critical role in verifying that products meet established safety and quality requirements before they reach consumers or enter export markets. Improved laboratory services also help businesses demonstrate compliance with technical regulations, making it easier to access new trading opportunities. This investment is therefore expected to benefit both producers and consumers while strengthening confidence in Zambian products.

Permanent Secretary in charge of Investment and Industrialisation, Mr. Crusivia C. Hichikumba, represented during the handover by Director of Technical Regulation Mr. Brian Moonga, described the equipment as a strategic investment for the country’s future. He noted that enhanced conformity assessment services will facilitate smoother trade along the Lobito Corridor, one of Southern Africa’s most important transport and trade routes. Strengthening standardisation systems is essential for ensuring product quality, protecting consumers and promoting fair trade practices. Efficient quality assurance systems also reduce unnecessary delays and technical barriers that can limit the movement of goods across borders. As regional trade continues to expand, strong standards infrastructure becomes increasingly important for supporting economic integration.

The Government emphasized that the new laboratory equipment will provide substantial benefits to several key sectors of the Zambian economy. Agriculture, manufacturing and fisheries are expected to gain from improved testing services that verify compliance with regional and international standards. For farmers and manufacturers, meeting recognized quality standards increases opportunities to access larger export markets while improving consumer confidence in locally produced goods. In the fisheries sector, accurate laboratory testing helps ensure that fish and fish products meet strict safety and quality requirements before reaching consumers. These improvements contribute to stronger value chains and increased competitiveness for Zambian businesses operating in domestic and international markets.

Another important aspect of the investment is its alignment with Zambia’s regional and continental trade commitments. Government officials stated that strengthening conformity assessment services supports Zambia’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Both trade frameworks encourage the free movement of goods by promoting harmonized standards and reducing technical barriers to trade. Modern laboratory facilities play an essential role in helping countries achieve these objectives by ensuring products meet agreed quality and safety requirements. Through improved compliance with international standards, Zambia expects to increase exports, attract investment and create new employment opportunities.

Zambia Bureau of Standards Executive Director Nathan Sing’ambwa welcomed the arrival of the new equipment, describing it as a major boost for the institution’s Testing Laboratories Unit. He explained that the advanced technology will significantly improve the accuracy, reliability and efficiency of laboratory testing and certification services. Faster testing processes will reduce turnaround times, allowing businesses to receive results more quickly and move products to market without unnecessary delays. Expanded laboratory capacity will also enable ZABS to serve a greater number of industries while maintaining internationally accredited testing services. These improvements strengthen the Bureau’s ability to support Zambia’s growing economy and expanding industrial sector.

Mr. Sing’ambwa further noted that the deployment of the equipment to laboratories in strategic regional locations will improve access to testing services for businesses operating along the Lobito Corridor and in North-Western Province. Bringing laboratory services closer to industries and trading communities reduces transport costs and shortens waiting periods for testing and certification. Businesses located outside major urban centers will benefit from easier access to high-quality conformity assessment services. Improved regional coverage also supports balanced economic development by ensuring that industries across the country receive equal access to essential technical services. This decentralized approach strengthens Zambia’s national quality infrastructure while encouraging regional industrial growth.

The fisheries sector stands to gain significantly from the investment, particularly through equipment provided under the PROFishBlue Programme. Enhanced laboratory testing will help ensure that fish and fish products produced and traded within Zambia consistently meet required quality and safety standards. Strong food safety systems protect public health while increasing consumer confidence in locally produced products. At the same time, compliance with international food safety requirements opens new opportunities for exporters seeking access to foreign markets. By improving product quality and certification, Zambia can strengthen its position in regional and international seafood trade.

The handover of advanced laboratory equipment to the Zambia Bureau of Standards marks an important investment in the country’s economic future. By strengthening testing capacity, improving conformity assessment services and expanding access to internationally accredited laboratories, the Government is laying the foundation for greater trade competitiveness and industrial growth. Support from the African Development Bank and the African Organisation for Standardisation demonstrates the value of regional partnerships in advancing sustainable development. The initiative is expected to benefit agriculture, manufacturing, fisheries and many other sectors while supporting Zambia’s commitments under AfCFTA and SADC. As the new equipment is deployed across the country, it is set to improve product quality, enhance consumer safety and create stronger opportunities for Zambian businesses to compete successfully in regional and global markets.
