The Government of Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and global engagement through the official opening of the Emerge–Eden International Model United Nations Conference 2026. The event was opened by Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation, Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, who underscored the importance of preparing young people for leadership roles in diplomacy and international affairs. The conference brings together young leaders from different backgrounds to simulate global decision making processes and develop practical skills in negotiation and policy dialogue. It is positioned as a key platform for nurturing the next generation of diplomats and international relations experts. The opening ceremony set a strong tone for discussions focused on global cooperation and leadership development.
Ms. Gundersen described the conference as a timely initiative that strengthens youth understanding of diplomacy and international relations. She noted that such platforms allow young people to engage directly with the principles and practices that guide global governance systems. The Government welcomed the Emerge–Eden Model UN Conference, emphasising its role in building capacity among young citizens to contribute meaningfully at national, regional, and international levels. She highlighted that exposure to diplomatic simulations helps participants develop critical thinking and structured communication skills. These competencies are essential for addressing complex global challenges in a rapidly changing world.
A key focus of the Permanent Secretary’s remarks was the importance of consensus building in international relations. She explained that the conference exposes participants to negotiation processes that mirror real United Nations operations. United Nations Resident Coordinator a.i. Seth Broekman also addressed the gathering and described the conference as more than a simulation exercise. He referred to it as a practical training ground for diplomacy where participants gain skills that extend beyond academic learning. He emphasised that young people must be equipped to operate in a world increasingly shaped by political divisions and misinformation. According to him, the ability to analyse information critically and maintain public trust will be essential for future leaders. He added that the skills developed through the Model UN experience will prepare participants to respond effectively to emerging global challenges.
Eden University Vice Chancellor Dr. Alvert Ng’andu expressed gratitude to the Government of Zambia, the United Nations, and Emerge Zambia for their support in hosting the conference. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to creating opportunities that empower young people through education and global exposure. He noted that institutions of higher learning play a central role in preparing students for active participation in global affairs. The university’s involvement in the conference reflects its broader mission to promote global citizenship and leadership development. He also encouraged students to fully engage with the learning opportunities provided through the programme.
