The Zambia national football team, Chipolopolo, will discover their opponents for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when the official draw takes place in Cairo today. The ceremony marks the beginning of a crucial journey for all participating nations as they compete for places at Africa’s biggest football tournament. A total of 48 teams will enter the qualification phase, making it one of the most competitive campaigns in recent AFCON history. These teams will be divided into 12 groups, with only 24 securing qualification for the final tournament. The draw has generated strong anticipation as national teams prepare to map out their path to continental success.

The event will be held at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 12h00 GMT, which corresponds to 15h00 local time in Cairo. Football administrators, team representatives, and officials from across the continent are expected to follow the draw closely as group compositions are revealed. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have already secured their places as co-hosts of the final tournament, but they will still participate in the qualifiers. Their inclusion ensures that the qualification process remains highly competitive despite their automatic qualification status as hosts. The structure maintains fairness and consistency across all participating nations.

Zambia has been placed in Pot 2 alongside strong African teams such as Ghana, Cape Verde, Guinea, Gabon, Uganda, Angola, and Benin. This positioning reflects Zambia’s competitive ranking and recent performances on the continental stage. Other teams in the same pot include Mozambique, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, and Comoros, making Pot 2 a highly balanced group of nations with the potential to challenge top-tier opponents. Zambia could be drawn against any of the teams from Pot 1, which features some of Africa’s football powerhouses. The Chipolopolo will need to prepare for a challenging group stage regardless of the final draw outcome.

Pot 1 includes Africa’s highest ranked teams such as Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, and Ivory Coast. These nations have consistently performed at the highest level in international competitions and will be seen as favourites heading into the qualifiers. The remaining teams in the top seeded category include Tunisia, Cameroon, DR Congo, Mali, South Africa, and Burkina Faso. Any combination from these pots could produce highly competitive group stage fixtures for Zambia. The draw format ensures that no group will be easy, and every team must be prepared for tough away and home encounters throughout the qualification campaign.

The qualification roadmap has already been outlined, with the first two matchdays scheduled for the FIFA international window from 21 September to 6 October 2026. Matchdays 3 and 4 will follow between 9 and 17 November 2026, while the final two rounds of matches will take place from 22 to 30 March 2027. This schedule gives teams time to prepare strategically between fixtures while maintaining competitive momentum. The final tournament will be held from 19 June to 17 July 2027, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The expanded format and structured timeline are expected to increase the intensity and excitement of the qualification process.

Teams were seeded into four pots of 12 based on FIFA rankings to ensure a balanced draw. This system places top ranked teams such as Morocco, Senegal, and Nigeria in Pot 1, while co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda were placed in Pot 3 despite their automatic qualification for the finals. The structure is designed to maintain competitive fairness while also respecting hosting arrangements. For Zambia, the draw presents both opportunity and challenge as they aim to navigate a difficult qualification path. The Chipolopolo will be targeting a strong campaign as they pursue what would be their 20th appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, a milestone that reflects their long standing presence in African football.
