The Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana visited Northern Province yesterday to assess the state of media operations and engage with stakeholders on the challenges facing the sector. The visit focused on strengthening cooperation between government institutions and media organisations in the region. It also provided an opportunity to understand operational realities within the local media landscape. The engagement took place during a politically sensitive period marked by heightened public interest in information accuracy due to the election year. Officials used the platform to reinforce expectations around responsible journalism and effective communication with the public.

During the courtesy call on the Northern Provincial Administration, Thabo Kawana stressed the importance of strict adherence to ethical guidelines by all media organisations. He warned that the election period increases the risk of misleading or alarming information being shared with the public. He noted that such content can create unnecessary tension and may divide communities if not properly managed. He emphasised that media houses carry a responsibility to verify information before publication and ensure accuracy in reporting. He also reinforced that professionalism must guide all editorial decisions, especially during sensitive national periods.

Kawana further stated that media organisations must operate strictly within their defined mandates and regulatory frameworks. He made it clear that government does not intend to close any media house that complies with established rules and standards. He explained that regulatory enforcement is not meant to suppress media freedom but to protect the integrity of information shared with citizens. He encouraged media houses to remain transparent, accountable, and consistent in their operations. He also highlighted that compliance strengthens public trust in journalism and supports national stability.

Independent Broadcasting Authority Director General Webster Malido also addressed the engagement and outlined the Authority’s role in ensuring compliance across the media industry. He stated that the Authority is actively working to ensure that media organisations follow regulatory guidelines and maintain professional standards. He added that his team is currently in Northern Province to better understand the regional media environment. He explained that this engagement helps the Authority respond more effectively to challenges faced by media practitioners on the ground. He emphasised that collaboration between regulators and media houses is essential for a stable information ecosystem.

Kasama District Commissioner Annie Paul, representing Acting Northern Province Permanent Secretary Beauty Undi Phiri, highlighted the importance of the media in public communication. She stated that media organisations play a critical role in delivering accurate and timely information to citizens. She also noted that the media supports government efforts by disseminating information on development programmes and public services. She urged journalists and media houses to maintain high levels of professionalism in their reporting. She added that ethical conduct is necessary to ensure that the public receives reliable and useful information.

The engagement in Northern Province reinforced the shared responsibility between government, regulators, and the media in maintaining a credible information environment. All parties emphasised the importance of accuracy, accountability, and ethical conduct, especially during the election period. The discussions also highlighted the need for continued dialogue to address operational challenges faced by media houses in different regions. The visit by Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana and accompanying officials reflected a broader effort to strengthen media governance and public trust. The outcomes of the engagement point to a continued focus on cooperation and compliance to support a stable and informed society.
