Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C, M.P, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, joined fellow ministers and dignitaries yesterday in London to commemorate Commonwealth Day, underscoring Zambia’s active engagement in international cooperation. The observance began with a Commonwealth flag-raising ceremony at Portcullis House, held in anticipation of the Commonwealth Games scheduled in Glasgow from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026. The ceremony brought together members of the diplomatic community and parliamentarians, including Hon. Christopher Kang’ombe, M.P for Kamfinsa, and Hon. Sibeso Sefulo, M.P for Mwandi. The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, highlighted the unifying impact of the Commonwealth, noting that member nations had historically collaborated to overcome challenges, including during two World Wars, and continue to support global peace efforts today. He emphasized the importance of unity amid contemporary conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, calling on the Commonwealth family to remain strong and united in purpose.

During the event, Hon. Sefulo read a message reflecting the shared values of the Commonwealth, drawing on the biblical principle of one body with many parts to emphasize cohesion and mutual support among member states. The ceremony offered a platform to reflect on the Commonwealth’s enduring role in fostering cooperation, dialogue, and cultural exchange among diverse nations. Hon. Haimbe’s participation reinforced Zambia’s commitment to these principles, demonstrating active engagement with fellow member states in promoting international understanding and solidarity. The discussions at the ceremony highlighted the Commonwealth’s evolving relevance in addressing contemporary global challenges, from promoting peace to supporting development initiatives and sporting events like the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Participants underscored that shared history and continued collaboration remain central to maintaining the values and objectives of the Commonwealth community.

Following the flag-raising, Hon. Haimbe joined a wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial Gates on Constitution Hill, a site established in 2002 to honor five million men and women from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Indian subcontinent who volunteered in the British Armed Forces during the First and Second World Wars. The Memorial Gates also recognize the ongoing contributions of their descendants and other members of the Commonwealth, reflecting the rich cultural and societal diversity within the United Kingdom. The ceremony served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these individuals and their enduring legacy in shaping both military history and civil society. Hon. Haimbe’s presence highlighted Zambia’s respect for historical ties and the nation’s recognition of the Commonwealth’s shared heritage. By participating in both the flag-raising and wreath-laying events, the Minister demonstrated Zambia’s commitment to preserving historical memory while advancing contemporary diplomatic and cultural relations within the Commonwealth.

The commemoration of Commonwealth Day in London reinforced the importance of solidarity, cooperation, and mutual respect among member states. Hon. Haimbe’s engagement alongside other Zambian parliamentarians exemplified the nation’s active role in these international observances, linking historical reflection with present-day commitments to peace, development, and unity. The events emphasized the Commonwealth’s capacity to unite diverse nations around shared values, from honoring wartime contributions to fostering dialogue and collaboration across economic, cultural, and political spheres. For Zambia, participation in such commemorations strengthens diplomatic ties, promotes cultural exchange, and affirms the country’s dedication to contributing meaningfully to the global Commonwealth family. The ceremonies in London offered a platform to celebrate past achievements, recognize ongoing contributions, and reaffirm a collective commitment to a unified and resilient international community.
