The Ministry of Health has convened a multi-sectoral team to validate the National Adolescent Health Package of Services and Standard Guidelines, aiming to ensure that adolescents in communities are better served and can thrive in health facilities. Chief Adolescent Health Officer, Ms. Mable Mweemba, emphasized that the work focuses on improving access, quality, and responsiveness of services for young people. The Health Care Provider Guide to Adolescent Care provides a structured framework for delivering age-appropriate health services, ensuring consistency and quality across facilities nationwide. It addresses a range of critical issues affecting adolescents, including HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, sexual and reproductive health, alcohol and substance use, non-communicable diseases, nutrition, and sexual and gender-based violence.
The guidelines aim to strengthen health systems by equipping health workers with clear protocols for adolescent care, enabling them to respond effectively to the unique needs of this age group. They promote comprehensive, integrated services that prioritize confidentiality, informed consent, and youth-friendly approaches to care. By standardizing the delivery of health services, the Ministry seeks to reduce barriers to care, improve health outcomes, and support adolescent well-being in all districts. The initiative also encourages collaboration between health facilities, schools, community organizations, and development partners to reach adolescents where they live and learn. Ultimately, the National Adolescent Health Package of Services provides a foundation for building resilient, healthy communities while empowering young people to make informed choices about their health.
