Yesterday morning, Zambia held a high-level bilateral meeting with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) secretary general, Her Excellency Ms Rebeca Grynspan, at State House. The meeting provided a platform for both sides to exchange comprehensive views on strengthening cooperation and achieving measurable economic outcomes. Zambia reaffirmed its commitment to a rationalized and consolidated partnership with UNCTAD, emphasizing the need for collaboration that delivers tangible benefits to citizens. The discussions highlighted Zambia’s focus on building a resilient economy that supports sustainable growth, job creation, and reliable treasury revenues. President Hakainde Hichilema expressed appreciation for UNCTAD’s consistent support, particularly during the nation’s debt restructuring period, which helped stabilize public finances and maintain investor confidence.

A central focus of the meeting was promoting e-commerce as a key driver of economic growth. Zambia highlighted the importance of the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) initiative, which UNCTAD supports, as a tool to modernize trade processes, reduce bottlenecks, and minimize practices that impede efficient commerce. By adopting digital trade solutions, Zambia aims to create a more transparent and efficient business environment, enabling small and medium enterprises to compete fairly in local and international markets. The discussions also explored avenues for enhancing trade facilitation, attracting investment, and fostering innovation in digital commerce. Both parties agreed that a strengthened partnership would accelerate Zambia’s economic transformation, providing citizens with more employment opportunities, improved business prospects, and a foundation for long-term financial stability. President Hichilema concluded by emphasizing that UNCTAD’s continued engagement is instrumental in guiding Zambia toward inclusive and sustainable economic development.
