Five years after the official opening of the iconic Kazungula Bridge, Botswana and Zambia have formalised a major step in regional cooperation with the signing of an agreement establishing the Kazungula Bridge Authority. The ceremony, held today in Kasane, underscores the importance both countries place on maintaining and expanding one of Africa’s most strategic trade links. The agreement outlines a joint commitment by the two governments to sponsor the construction, operation, and long-term maintenance of the bridge infrastructure. Botswana will host the Authority’s headquarters, while Zambia will retain the Executive Director position, ensuring balanced governance and operational oversight. Officials highlighted that the Authority will play a key role in sustaining the bridge’s operations and supporting economic growth across the region.

The Kazungula Bridge has become a vital corridor for trade, linking southern and central Africa and facilitating the movement of goods, services, and people. Its strategic location reduces transport times, lowers costs, and strengthens supply chains for multiple industries in both countries. The newly established Authority will ensure that the bridge is maintained to international standards, guaranteeing safety, efficiency, and reliability for years to come. It will also provide a framework for ongoing collaboration between Botswana and Zambia in infrastructure management, enabling joint planning, monitoring, and resource allocation. By creating this dedicated institution, both governments aim to secure the long-term sustainability of the bridge and maximize its contribution to regional development.

The signing ceremony brought together high-level representatives from both nations, with Botswana represented by Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Noah Salakae and Zambia by Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Hon. Eng. Charles Lubasi Milupi. Their participation reinforced the shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and advancing economic integration. The Authority is expected to foster innovation in infrastructure management and enhance trade facilitation through streamlined procedures, improved traffic management, and maintenance of critical bridge facilities. Observers noted that this move reflects a broader vision of strengthening regional connectivity and boosting the competitiveness of southern African economies.

Tomorrow, Presidents Duma Boko of Botswana and Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia will jointly officiate at the official launch of the Kazungula Bridge Authority at the bridge site. Their presence is set to highlight the bridge’s symbolic and practical significance as a tool for regional unity and economic progress. The establishment of the Authority signals a long-term commitment to cross-border collaboration, ensuring that the Kazungula Bridge continues to serve as a reliable trade artery. With both governments actively involved in its governance and strategic planning, the bridge is poised to remain a key enabler of regional commerce, investment, and sustainable development. This milestone demonstrates how infrastructure can unite nations and drive economic opportunities across borders.
