On 9 January 2026, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Honourable Gift Sialubalo, MP, officially handed over ten tractors with hydraulic tipping trailers to constituencies in the City of Lusaka. The move is set to strengthen solid waste management under the Cash for Work Programme and improve overall environmental cleanliness.

The four-wheel-drive tractors, managed by the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company, are designed to enhance the hauling of waste generated daily. At the handover ceremony in Matero Constituency, Hon. Sialubalo emphasized the importance of community participation in maintaining a clean environment and called for an end to indiscriminate waste disposal.

Hon. Sialubalo highlighted that the tractors will not only serve Cash for Work activities but also support the daily collection of waste, particularly in peri-urban areas where service delivery gaps persist. He described the initiative as part of the Government’s commitment to inclusive development and equitable service provision across all Lusaka constituencies.

The Minister stated that the deployment of the tractors is expected to reduce delays in solid waste collection and deliver visible improvements in cleanliness, public health, and environmental safety. He also encouraged proactive measures such as garbage recycling, which can create jobs while promoting a cleaner environment. Hon. Sialubalo stressed that fostering a culture of cleanliness aligns with the Government’s vision of building a healthy, productive, and resilient Zambia through better service delivery and responsible governance.

Speaking at the event, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Mr. Nicholas Phiri, noted that the Cash for Work Programme has been aligned with Lusaka’s solid waste management priorities. He added that the ten tractors will complement routine waste collection services and improve operational efficiency.

Meanwhile, Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management CEO, Mr. Imuwana Mwanamwalye, described the acquisition of the tractors as a major milestone in advancing solid waste management across the city.

The handover marks a practical step towards improving urban sanitation, enhancing public health, and reinforcing Government efforts to deliver development at the local level in Lusaka.
