Netball Zambia has officially announced the withdrawal of both the Men’s and Women’s National Netball Teams from the 2025 Africa Netball Cup, scheduled for 8th to 14th December 2025 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The decision comes after the Association was unable to raise the required K1,200,000 needed to facilitate the teams’ participation in the tournament.

Despite rigorous efforts and ongoing engagement with potential partners, Netball Zambia was unable to secure the necessary sponsorship to cover travel, accommodation, and tournament preparations. Secretary General Pritchard Ngoma expressed deep regret over the development, highlighting the difficult nature of the decision.

“It is with great disappointment that we announce the withdrawal of our Men’s and Women’s National Teams from the 2025 Africa Netball Cup. We have done everything within our means to mobilise resources, but we can no longer hold on in the hope of a last-minute sponsor at this advanced stage, as doing so risks exposing the Association to penalties,” said Ngoma.

Ngoma extended his gratitude to the players and fans for their commitment to the sport. “We appreciate the athletes’ dedication and the support from the netball community nationwide. We remain hopeful that Zambia will bounce back stronger and compete at next year’s tournament,” he added.

The announcement is particularly impactful for the Women’s National Team, which made history by winning their maiden Africa Netball Cup title in 2023. Netball Zambia has affirmed its commitment to building on that success and ensuring better preparation for future competitions.

The Association acknowledged the emotional effect this withdrawal may have on the players and fans but emphasized the need to secure more sustainable funding pathways for the national teams. Netball Zambia thanked all stakeholders, partners, and supporters for their continued backing as it works to strengthen the sport and provide long-term stability for Zambia’s netball programs.

This decision underscores ongoing challenges in funding and support for national sports teams, highlighting the importance of sustained investment to maintain Zambia’s competitiveness on the continental stage.
