The Junior Chipolopolo are set to chase a Round of 16 berth at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 as they face African rivals Mali in a crucial knockout encounter at Aspire Zone, Al Rayyan, on Friday, 14 November 2025. Kickoff is scheduled for 15:00 CAT with Yender Herrera of Venezuela officiating.

Zambia enters the knockout stage unbeaten, following a strong Group H campaign marked by organisation, discipline, and attacking flair. The Junior Chipolopolo opened the tournament with a confident win over Indonesia, followed by a dominant 5-2 victory against Honduras. They closed the group stage with a composed 1-1 draw against four-time champions Brazil, finishing with seven points.

Mali progressed from Group L after a mixed but effective run that showcased their physicality and direct style of play. The West African side began with a commanding win over New Zealand, faced a setback against Austria, but bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

Zambia Under-17 Head Coach Dennis Makinka emphasized that knockout matches require a tactical shift. “Group stages are different from knockout stages. In knockouts, you have to win the game. The mentality and aggressiveness will stay, but tactically we will be different,” Makinka told FAZ Media. “We know their style; physical and quick on the ball. We have to match that. We played Brazil in a similar manner, and the boys showed they can rise to the challenge. Concentration will be key, especially at the back.”

Forward Lukonde Mwale praised the squad’s unity and confidence ahead of the encounter. Reflecting on his form during the group stage, Mwale said, “I started the tournament well, had a tough game against Honduras, but bounced back versus Brazil. I want to keep that form going into the Mali match.” He added, “There’s no fear. We have capable leaders, a strong technical bench, and a united squad. The bond we’ve built is strong.”

Mwale also expressed belief in Zambia’s potential to reach the finals. “We’ll take it game by game, but I believe we can reach the finals. We are not coming home anytime soon; we hope to be here in Qatar until the 27th.”

This match sets up a clash between two distinct African playing styles. Zambia relies on speed in transition, collective defending, and fluid attacking patterns. Mali leverages physical dominance, pace, and quick vertical movements, often launching rapid attacks in numbers. Zambia’s improved defensive structure versus Mali’s direct play means concentration and tactical discipline will likely decide the outcome.

The winner of this fixture will advance to face the victor of the Morocco versus USA match in the Round of 16, keeping Zambia’s hopes alive for a deep run in FIFA’s youngest age-group global tournament.
