Zambia is set to experience a major transformation in its transportation sector thanks to a £50 million grant from the European Union, a move expected to boost regional connectivity and economic growth. The grant will play a key role in rehabilitating critical railway infrastructure, upgrading signalling systems, and encouraging private sector participation, positioning Zambia as a central player in regional trade.

Information and Media Director Spokesperson, Mr. Henry Kapata, highlighted that the grant will improve safety and efficiency across the rail network, ensuring seamless transportation of goods and passengers. Upgraded signalling systems will enhance reliability and capacity, allowing higher freight volumes and reducing congestion at ports and borders. By promoting private sector involvement, the investment will drive innovation, attract further investment, and encourage public-private partnerships within the rail sector.

The impact of the grant is expected to be wide-ranging. Improved rail infrastructure will increase efficiency, safety, and reliability, supporting trade and economic growth while enhancing the overall business environment. It will lower transportation costs, create employment opportunities, and stimulate social development in local communities. Additionally, the grant will support reforms aimed at making the rail sector more competitive and transparent, fostering good governance and attracting investment.

This investment aligns with Zambia’s long-term economic goals. Enhanced rail connectivity will unlock trade opportunities with neighbouring countries, expand market access, and strengthen regional integration. It will support economic diversification by reducing reliance on copper exports and promoting sustainable development. The grant also contributes to Zambia’s sustainable development objectives, including poverty reduction and improved living standards, ensuring that economic growth benefits are equitably shared.

The European Union’s support underscores its commitment to Zambia’s development, reinforcing the country’s role as a regional transportation hub and fostering economic growth, cooperation, and integration across Southern Africa.
