The Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, has clarified that the government is not calling for price controls. He reaffirmed that Zambia remains committed to a private-sector-driven economy where prices are determined by the market.
The Minister emphasized that his focus is on ensuring fair pricing that reflects current economic conditions. With inflation trending downward, the Kwacha stabilizing, and fuel prices relatively lower, manufacturers, suppliers, and transporters are expected to pass these benefits on to consumers. Hon. Mulenga warned against maintaining artificially high prices that do not reflect the current macroeconomic environment.
This approach is a call for responsible market behavior, not government intervention. Consumers are expected to benefit from economic stabilization, while industry partners have a role in ensuring that outdated cost structures do not translate into higher prices at the retail level.
