The Government of the Republic of Zambia has announced the successful conclusion of a maize supply agreement with the Government of the Republic of Malawi through its National Food Reserve Agency. The contract, valued at 77 million US dollars, covers the export of 200,000 metric tonnes of maize from Zambia to Malawi.
The signing took place in Lilongwe, Malawi, following a recent telephone discussion between Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and Malawian President Arthur Peter Mutharika. The agreement highlights the commitment of both nations to regional cooperation in addressing food insecurity.
The contract was signed by Mr. Justin Chuunka, Executive Director of Zambia’s Food Reserve Agency (FRA), and Mr. George Macheka, Executive Director of Malawi’s National Food Reserve Agency. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr. Rueben Mtolo, Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture, and Ms. Rosa Fatch Mbilizi, Malawi’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development.
During the signing, Mr. Mtolo reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to supporting regional food security initiatives. He stated that maize for export would be sourced from the Eastern Province, particularly Chipata, to reduce transport costs and stimulate local economic activity. He commended Malawi for prioritising the fight against hunger and emphasised that Zambia stands ready to implement directives from both Heads of State.
Ms. Mbilizi expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Zambia for responding promptly to Malawi’s request for strategic maize support. She highlighted that Malawi’s administration prioritises food security through initiatives such as irrigated winter cropping, climate-resilient crops, and bilateral partnerships. She noted that the maize procurement deal with Zambia will stabilise Malawi’s national food supply amid adverse climatic conditions and increasing demand for staple foods.
The Zambian government recognises the socio-economic benefits of the agreement. The export contract is expected to boost economic activity while reinforcing Zambia’s role as a key player in regional food security, economic cooperation, and diplomatic engagement within Southern Africa.
The Ministry of Agriculture assured citizens that the Food Reserve Agency will execute the contract without compromising domestic food security. The FRA will maintain its mandate to safeguard Zambia’s strategic food reserves while fulfilling regional obligations efficiently and with integrity.
