The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has urged journalists and members of the public to take an active role in ensuring product safety as the country moves to enforce 41 new compulsory standards beginning October 1, 2025.

Speaking in Lusaka during the official opening of a media engagement workshop, ZCSA Executive Director Gerald Chizinga said the new measures, introduced through Statutory Instrument Number 20 of 2025, bring the total number of regulated products to 102. These include food, beverages, fertilizers, solar products, energy drinks, construction materials, and used motor vehicles.

Mr. Chizinga underscored the critical role of the media in educating the public on consumer protection and product safety. He stressed that while enforcement remains vital, awareness and vigilance are equally important to safeguard public health and consumer rights.

He encouraged consumers to remain alert by purchasing goods from reputable outlets, checking manufacturing and expiry dates, and reporting expired or suspicious products to relevant authorities.

Mr. Chizinga noted that the new compulsory standards are designed to enhance consumer safety, improve product quality, and protect the environment. He added that collaboration between regulators, the media, and the public will be key to ensuring the effective implementation of these standards.

The enforcement of the 41 additional standards reflects Zambia’s commitment to strengthening consumer protection while aligning local practices with international benchmarks. The ZCSA has pledged to continue working closely with stakeholders to ensure that only safe and compliant products reach the Zambian market.
