Lusaka Province Chess Association Director Mary Mashane has urged more women and girls to participate in chess, stressing that the game is accessible to everyone despite its traditionally male-dominated image. Her call came during a chess championship held in Lusaka, which drew over 100 players, including international competitors.

In the Open Section, International Master Gillian Bwalya secured first place, while Zimbabwe’s Tanaka Dziyanyi claimed the Ladies title. The junior categories saw competitive matches across different age groups. In the Under 12 Boys division, Mweembezi Lweendo emerged champion. Paul Magamwazi and Bertha Banda won the Under 16 Boys and Girls categories, respectively. Michelle Kavota dominated the Under 10 and Under 12 Girls divisions, while Mingze Wang took the Under 10 Boys title.

Tournament Logistics Manager Musongo Shamilimo explained that the event was designed to promote chess growth in Zambia. He noted that the large turnout indicated rising interest in the sport.

Participants described the tournament as a valuable learning experience, particularly for young players. They said it helped build confidence, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship. Mashane emphasized that greater female participation would strengthen the game nationally and encourage the next generation of players.

The Lusaka championship reflects Zambia’s growing chess culture and the increasing opportunities for women and youth to engage in competitive chess at national and international levels.
