Zambia has marked a major milestone with the official launch of the S3 Expansion Project by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) and the Kansanshi team. Commissioned today, the project signals strong private sector confidence and reinforces Zambia’s position as a leading investment destination in Africa.

Valued at over USD 1.25 billion, the S3 Expansion is one of the largest private investments in Zambia’s history. The project will extend the life of the Kansanshi mine by more than 20 years and increase copper production to nearly 300,000 tonnes annually. This expansion is expected to have transformative effects on the nation’s economy, boosting export earnings, strengthening the balance of payments, and generating quality employment opportunities.

The S3 Expansion will also support local businesses and enhance corporate social responsibility initiatives, benefiting communities around the mine. President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized that the project exemplifies how strategic partnerships between the government and private sector can deliver sustainable development.

Recognizing the importance of artisanal and small-scale miners, the government has directed the Ministry of Mines to convene an Artisanal Mining Conference. The goal is to develop policies that promote legal, safe, and formalized mining practices. These measures aim to protect lives, unlock economic opportunities for citizens, and ensure Zambia’s mineral wealth benefits all, complementing large-scale projects like the S3 Expansion. The government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining.

President Hichilema extended gratitude to traditional leaders for their guidance and support throughout the project. Their involvement has been instrumental in fostering community trust and collaboration, ensuring that the S3 Expansion contributes to sustainable development across the region.

The S3 Expansion Project represents a significant step forward for Zambia’s mining sector. With increased copper output, stronger economic growth, and enhanced community benefits, the project positions Zambia as a model for responsible and impactful mineral resource development in Africa.
