The Government has appointed Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, as the sole spokesperson on the ongoing matter regarding the repatriation and burial of former President Edgar Lungu.

Confirming the appointment in an interview on Thursday, Kangwa said he would serve as the exclusive source for all official statements on the issue. “Yes, I am. I have been named on behalf of the government to oversee the ongoing court case and burial process as government continues to seek appropriate resolution of the burial of Mr Lungu,” Kangwa stated.

The appointment comes at a time when the matter remains unsettled in the courts. Recently, the South African High Court, Gauteng Division, adjourned sine die (indefinitely) the application by Mr Lungu’s family seeking leave to appeal a judgment relating to his burial.

By designating a single spokesperson, the Government aims to streamline communication and ensure clarity on the sensitive issue. Kangwa will be responsible for providing official updates on the legal proceedings, repatriation arrangements, and the burial process.

The repatriation and burial of the former head of state remain matters of national concern. Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the issue is resolved appropriately, with respect for the law and the legacy of the former President.

Kangwa’s appointment signals the Government’s intention to maintain consistency and authority in its communication as the process moves forward.
