The Zambia Defence Force (ZDF) has announced plans to harvest approximately 29,600 metric tonnes of maize during the 2024/2025 farming season. This significant agricultural output follows a concerted effort by the Defence Force to bolster national food security amidst the challenges posed by climate change.

According to a statement released by Paul Shalala, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Defence, the Zambia Defence Force deployed specialized personnel and modern equipment across various agricultural sites. This initiative enabled the planting of maize on a total of 3,967 hectares during the current farming season.

The ramped-up agricultural activity by the ZDF comes in response to a directive from President Hakainde Hichilema, who, as Commander-In-Chief of the Defence Force, called on all three branches of the military to intensify their contribution to ensuring food security following the adverse effects of climate change experienced in the 2023/2024 farming season.

Since this directive, the Defence Force has made substantial investments in farming inputs, equipment, and skilled manpower, marking a robust commitment to supporting Zambia’s agricultural sector. The initiative not only aims to increase maize production but also seeks to mitigate the food shortages that threatened the country during previous years.

The ZDF’s proactive engagement in agriculture highlights the role of the military beyond traditional defense duties, extending its service to national development and resilience building. By integrating modern farming techniques and mobilizing resources effectively, the Defence Force is helping to stabilize maize supply—a staple food critical to Zambia’s food basket and economic stability.

As Zambia strives to overcome climate-induced agricultural setbacks, the Defence Force’s maize production target is a welcome boost toward achieving food sufficiency and supporting vulnerable communities. This effort complements broader government strategies aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, fostering rural development, and ensuring that every citizen has access to affordable and nutritious food.

The projected harvest of nearly 30,000 metric tonnes of maize underscores the Zambia Defence Force’s growing role as a key player in the nation’s fight against hunger and food insecurity. With continued investment and collaboration across sectors, Zambia is positioning itself for a more resilient agricultural future.
