Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Keith Mweemba has hinted at the potential return of striker Fashion Sakala to the Chipolopolo squad, months after a widely publicised fallout between the player and national team coach Avram Grant.

Sakala, who has been sidelined from national team duties, made headlines earlier this year when he openly criticised Grant, accusing him of mismanaging player selections and contributing to what he described as the decline of Zambian football. His absence from the squad has sparked ongoing debate, with many fans and stakeholders calling for reconciliation.

Among those voicing concern is Paramount Chief Mpezeni, who recently questioned why FAZ had not taken steps to resolve the dispute and reintegrate Sakala into the team. In response, Mweemba acknowledged the chief’s comments and clarified the association’s position.

“Look, we respect our chief, and he was merely expressing himself, and you have to respect that,” Mweemba said. “As the new FAZ executive, we are focused on promoting unity and professionalism in all aspects of the game.”

Mweemba further noted that since the current administration took office, there has not been a competitive fixture involving the senior men’s national team, hinting that the door remains open for discussions ahead of upcoming matches.

“We have not played any competitive games since coming into office, but as we begin preparations for future assignments, we will do everything possible to ensure that the best talent is available for selection. No player is bigger than the team, but at the same time, everyone deserves a fair opportunity,” he added.

Fashion Sakala, currently plying his trade abroad, remains one of Zambia’s most prominent attacking talents. His potential return would undoubtedly boost Chipolopolo’s depth and attacking options, especially as the team prepares for key continental and World Cup qualification campaigns.

FAZ’s signals toward reconciliation come at a time when fans are eager to see harmony restored in the national setup, with hopes that all differences can be put aside in the interest of national pride and football development.

As the new FAZ leadership charts its course, the emphasis on professionalism, dialogue, and unity suggests that Sakala’s return to the Chipolopolo fold may be closer than many anticipated.
