Zambia’s Infrastructural Development on the Rise: Insights from China Railway Heavy Industry Corporation Tour

Zambia is emerging as one of the African countries experiencing positive growth in infrastructural development projects. This encouraging trend was highlighted during a recent tour by a group of Young Media Professionals from various English-speaking African countries to the China Railway Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCHI). The corporation is globally recognized for its expertise in tunneling and heavy machinery construction, supplying equipment to numerous countries around the world.

During the tour, a representative from CRCHI’s Public Relations Office emphasized the company’s status as the world’s largest machinery producer. He explained that beyond manufacturing, the company also offers specialized training programs to other countries, enhancing their capacity in machinery production and infrastructure development.

The spokesperson stressed the critical role construction plays in a country’s development, noting that when infrastructural projects are well managed, they can significantly boost economic growth. CRCHI employs over 4,000 workers across various departments, including assembly, distribution, marketing, and sales, reflecting the company’s extensive operations and global reach.

Highlighting recent regional developments, the spokesperson mentioned that in September 2024, Lesotho received two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) ordered from China in July 2024. These machines are now instrumental in the ongoing construction of Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), a key infrastructure initiative in southern Africa.

Zambia’s growing engagement in infrastructural development, supported by partnerships and technology from global leaders like CRCHI, signals a promising future for the country’s economic landscape. Continued investments and strategic collaborations will likely accelerate Zambia’s journey toward robust infrastructure and sustainable development.
