The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has strongly denied allegations that it has approved mining activities at Senseli Mine in Chingola, located in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province. In a clear statement, the Ministry reaffirmed its firm commitment to ensuring all mining operations nationwide are conducted legally and in full compliance with national regulations.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, clarified that Senseli Mine is a privately owned operation and stressed that no official mining authorization has been granted by the government for activities at the site. Speaking to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka, Minister Kabuswe highlighted ongoing discussions between government officials and Senseli Mine’s owners aimed at formalizing the mine’s operations according to Zambia’s mining laws.

“The government does not condone illegal mining; we are working closely with the owners of Senseli Mine to ensure that their activities are regularised and meet the required safety and legal standards,” Minister Kabuswe stated. He emphasized the government’s unwavering stance against unlawful mining activities and pledged full enforcement of mining laws through collaboration with security and regulatory agencies.

Addressing recent rumors concerning Chingola Member of Parliament Chipoka Mulenga’s visit to Senseli Mine, the Minister clarified that the MP’s presence was not an endorsement of any unauthorized mining. Rather, Mr. Mulenga’s visit was aimed at educating miners on the importance of adhering to legal requirements and promoting responsible mining practices.

Minister Kabuswe also updated the public on enforcement measures taken at Konkola Copper Mines’ (KCM) Nchanga Mine, where all illegal miners were ordered to vacate the premises last Saturday. He confirmed that security personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain order and ensure compliance with the directive.

This firm stance by the Ministry underscores Zambia’s dedication to sustainable and lawful mining, safeguarding both the country’s mineral resources and the wellbeing of its mining communities. As efforts continue to regularize mining activities at Senseli Mine and elsewhere, the government remains clear: illegal mining will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
