President Hakainde Hichilema is set to participate in the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), which will take place from February 15 to 16, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The summit, the highest decision-making body of the AU, will be held under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.” It is expected to bring together African leaders to discuss pressing continental matters, including institutional reforms, economic integration, peace and security, and Africa’s role in global governance.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, confirmed the President’s attendance, emphasizing Zambia’s commitment to regional and continental development. He noted that discussions would focus on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), AU institutional reforms, and Africa’s engagement in the G20.
Key Issues on the Agenda
The Assembly will deliberate on reports from various high-level committees, including:
- The Committee of 10 Heads of State on the reform of the United Nations Security Council.
- The AUDA-NEPAD Heads of State Orientation Committee.
- The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Forum.
During his time in Ethiopia, President Hichilema is expected to attend the APRM Summit and a High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Financing in Africa. Additionally, he will engage in bilateral discussions with key leaders to advance Zambia’s economic and diplomatic interests.
Pre-Summit Meetings
Ahead of the main summit, the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, comprising AU Ministers, will take place from February 12 to 13, 2025. This meeting will lay the groundwork for discussions among Heads of State.
President Hichilema’s Return
Following the conclusion of his official engagements, President Hichilema is expected to return to Zambia immediately.
The AU Summit will be closely watched as leaders discuss ways to strengthen African unity, address economic challenges, and enhance the continent’s role on the global stage.
