Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Andrew Kamanga has announced a significant milestone in Zambian football with the unveiling of a modern team bus, purchased at a cost of $428,187.32 through the FIFA Forward Support Programme. The ceremony took place at Football House, underscoring the association’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure supporting Zambian football.

Addressing Transport Challenges

Kamanga highlighted that the acquisition of the state-of-the-art bus resolves long-standing transportation challenges faced by the national teams during local and international engagements. “This modern bus marks a major milestone in resolving that issue. We extend our gratitude to the FIFA Regional Office and our dedicated FAZ Secretariat, whose tireless efforts ensured the successful delivery of this project,” he said.

He emphasized that the bus’s modern design offers maximum comfort for players, boosting their morale and aligning with FAZ’s broader goal of achieving excellence in football.

Collaboration with FIFA

The bus is a product of FAZ’s fruitful collaboration with FIFA, following a visit by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in 2022. During his visit, Infantino launched the $10 million technical center project in Chongwe District, an initiative currently progressing with government support.

Kamanga also acknowledged FIFA’s contribution to other critical projects, such as rehabilitating four provincial stadiums—David Kaunda Stadium in Chipata, Independence Stadium in Solwezi, Kaole Stadium in Luapula, and Kasama Stadium in Northern Province. FIFA further supported the renovation of FAZ’s accommodation center.

FIFA’s Commitment to Development

David Fani, Lead for the FIFA Regional Office for Southern Africa, commended FAZ for its utilization of the FIFA Forward Development Programme, describing it as a transformative initiative for global football. “FIFA Forward provides 360-degree tailor-made support to member associations and the six Confederations. FAZ has successfully utilized its entitlement for infrastructure renovations, national team support, and capacity building,” Fani said.

He encouraged FAZ to continue its efforts in football development and expressed optimism about upcoming projects, including the construction of a technical center and support for grassroots football.

Mixed Public Reactions

While the bus’s unveiling has been hailed as a step forward for Zambian football, the public’s reactions have been mixed. Some have questioned the cost of the bus, with concerns about whether the price aligns with market standards. Others have suggested monetizing the bus by renting it out during off-seasons to generate additional income for FAZ.

Despite differing opinions, the new bus is seen as a symbol of FAZ’s dedication to elevating football in Zambia, ensuring better conditions for players, and fostering growth in the sport.

As Kamanga concluded, “This is just the beginning of our journey to transform Zambian football into a force to be reckoned with. We remain committed to working with FIFA and other stakeholders to achieve this goal.”
