Progress on Katete-Chanida Road Rehabilitation and One Stop Border Facilities

The rehabilitation of the 55-kilometre Katete-Chanida Road and the development of associated One Stop Border facilities at Chanida, Eastern Province, under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) financing model, are progressing smoothly.

The project is a major infrastructure development aimed at improving transportation and trade connectivity between Zambia and its neighbouring countries. Recent reports indicate significant progress in the major works, including:

  1. Subbase construction and stabilization – 5 kilometres completed
  2. Crushed stone base construction – 3 kilometres completed
  3. Asphalt concrete surfacing – 3 kilometres completed

The 3-kilometre section that has been surfaced falls within the Katete Central Business District (CBD). This particular section had been a major challenge during both the dry and rainy seasons due to its deteriorating condition. The completion of this section has already brought about a noticeable improvement in the business environment, much to the appreciation of the local business community.

The rehabilitation efforts are part of the government’s commitment to upgrading road infrastructure to facilitate trade, improve accessibility, and boost economic activities in the region. The ongoing work on the Katete-Chanida Road and One Stop Border facilities is expected to bring further benefits once fully completed, making travel and transport more efficient, particularly for cross-border trade.

The Road Development Agency (RDA) is overseeing the project, and the successful implementation under the PPP model demonstrates how public and private sector collaboration can drive impactful development in the country. With the continuing progress, the full completion of the project will further strengthen the region’s infrastructure and contribute to Zambia’s broader economic development goals.
