The Government of Zambia has made significant strides in enhancing the education system by providing meals to over 4.6 million school children across the country. The initiative, known as the School Feeding Programme, aims to improve school attendance and overall learning outcomes by ensuring students are well-nourished and motivated to attend school regularly.
According to Kunda Mando, the Ministry of Education’s Assistant Director of Communication, the programme is currently operational in 106 districts, impacting more than 8,190 primary schools nationwide. The initiative has proven to be a game-changer in addressing absenteeism, as many students are now encouraged to attend school due to the availability of meals.
A Key Strategy to Combat Absenteeism
Ms. Mando highlighted that one of the most significant benefits of the School Feeding Programme is its role in reducing absenteeism. With students knowing they will receive food at school, they are more likely to attend classes consistently, leading to better engagement and improved academic performance.
“This programme has helped to reduce absenteeism because pupils now know they will have food at school,” Ms. Mando stated during a media training workshop organized by the Zambia Education Programme Coordinating Unit (ZEPCU) in Kitwe. The availability of meals has not only improved attendance rates but has also encouraged students to stay in school longer, giving them a better chance at succeeding academically.
Encouraging Parental Involvement
In addition to its positive impact on school attendance, the School Feeding Programme has also fostered greater parental involvement in their children’s education. Ms. Mando noted that parents are more engaged in supporting their children’s schooling, as they recognize the benefits of the programme in improving their children’s learning experience.
The initiative serves as an incentive for families to take a more active role in their children’s academic journey, with a collective effort towards ensuring the success of the programme and, ultimately, the academic success of their children.
The School Feeding Programme represents a vital investment in the future of Zambia’s children, offering not only nutritional support but also encouraging improved school attendance, academic performance, and parental involvement. With over 4.6 million children benefiting from the programme, the Government of Zambia is taking important steps toward creating a brighter future for its young learners.
As this initiative continues to roll out across the country, it is clear that the combination of nutrition and education can lead to significant positive outcomes for both students and their communities.
